In conjunction with the 𝟭𝟮𝘁𝗵 𝗞𝗟 𝗕𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗵 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟵 舞踏祭, 𝗡𝘆𝗼𝗯𝗮 𝗞𝗮𝗻 and 𝗞𝗟 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀 are back with another multidisciplinary collaboration. Titled 𝘖𝘭𝘥 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘳, it is one of two main highlight performances in the festival, which also includes a photography exhibition and Butoh workshop.

This time, the ensemble intimately explores and reimagines characters and themes from Shakespeare’s 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘳, and will also be collaborating with returning Japanese Butoh artist, Dai Matsuoka.

Through the words and perspectives of characters in 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘳, the production examines the struggles of human desire, and the role of human beings in relation to the universe. Through the spirit of ‘play’ and Butoh, it seeks new distilled and heightened expressions of the complexities experienced in the original play.

The significance of 16 September commemorates the establishment of the Malaysian federation in 1963 with the joining of Malaya, North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore to form Malaysia.

In collaboration with Arkib Negara Malaysia, the exhibition's highlight will be the showcase of National Artefacts; 1951 Nash Rambler; the car used by Tunku Abdul Rahman to declare the independence of the Federation of Tanah Melayu on 31 August 1957 and subsequently paraded around the city.

Mobile Phone Photography Contest
2 - 16 September
The Gallery, Publika
(Opening Ceremony on 4 September at 11am)

Whip out your mobile phones, start snapping away and submit your entries! The winning submissions for “Sama-Sama: Publika’s Hari Malaysia Mobile Photography Competition 2019” should best capture the indomitable resilience, spirit and unity of “The People of Malaysia”.

One of the main intentions of this competition is demonstrate the extensive participation of, "The people of Malaysia" - citizens and non-citizens alike - who have contributed, in their own ways, towards nation building.

While we admire those in the centre-stage of national development, there are others who are on the fringes, but their contributions are no less important.

The national fabric is a wholesome ideation: everyone pitches in, their weights maybe different but their national spirits shine just as equitably, imbued by the optimism of progress and well-being, going forward.

It is envisaged that the indomitable resilience of, "The People of Malaysia" will be much evident in the submissions by the participants.

Vintage Cars Exhibition
2 - 16 September
The Gallery

In collaboration with the Malaysia and Singapore Vintage Car Register (MSVCR) that was founded in Malacca in 1955 to bring together vintage car enthusiasts and in particular to encourage the use, restoration and preservation of vintage cars and motor cycles, with the emphasis on use.

The Register organises a series of attractive activities, such as circuit racing at Pasir Gudang and Sepang race tracks in Malaysia, rallies in Malaysian rubber estates and palm oil plantations, highly polished Concours d'Elegance and events in aid of charities. In addition, regular social events take place at various venues in Malaysia and Singapore. In recent years the Register has been selected to provide our members’ cars for the supporting events in both the Malaysia F1 Grand Prix and the Singapore F1 Grand Prix, including the Drivers’ Parades.

Although we are a relatively small club, with around 400 members spread across the world, we are very active and enthusiastic, with a website
www.msvcr.com, a monthly newsletter and a high quality quarterly magazine that has won the admiration and praise of historic motoring clubs around the world. We maintain contact with similar clubs in Asia and in Europe, North America and Australasia, extending a warm welcome to their members at our events or when merely passing through. Some of our members have campaigned their cars in international events such as the Mille Miglia in Italy and the Beijing to Paris Rally. It is important to add, however, that we have the widest spectrum of membership from all walks of life. There is nothing elitist about the MSVCR. Some members use their historic cars or motor cycles as everyday transport while some others do not even own an old vehicle. The common characteristic is that they are all enthusiasts.

Wan Umar Shahid Wan Ibrahim (born 10 April 1990) is a Malaysian singer-songwriter, musician and composer, who performs under the stage name of Sounds Of Kites. An avid listener of folk music, experimental and post-rock, Sounds Of Kites is his amalgamation of sound ideas blending together in an effort to create the images he pictures. With soldiers of guitars behind him on stage, coupled with a baritone vocal, the songs he plays paint the audience pictures ranging from the galloping sounds of taking a ride on a steam-engined locomotive, to the soundscape that is justifiable only by drifting in a vast black sea. It was a windy afternoon out in a local park, when Wan Umar Shahid and friend stumbled upon an old man flying a kite with his grandchildren. Save for a brief moment looking up, his eyes were fixed on the children tugging and pulling on the old man’s shirt, all asking him to fly it higher. Instantly captivated by the joy, the cheers, the sounds the children made, he wanted to capture the essence of what he heard in a single phrase. Sounds Of Kites has been actively performing in the music scene around Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Pulau Pinang, Sarawak, Johor and London since 2015, hitting up stages such as on Merdekarya, The Gaslight KL, Urbanscapes 2017, Earth Hour KL 2018, Minut Init Galeria, Grind 22, The Bee, The Canteen at China House Penang and King William IV London. Constantly revisiting musical inspirations such as Ben Howard, The Tallest Man On Earth, Richard Hawley, Natalia Lafourcade, Sigur Ros, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, he gathers a myriad of sounds in his head and apply them on stage like lotion to flaky dry skin, with one of his originals, “The Dancer”, a fast finger-picking and folky singing tune, got him recognised as a finalist in the Taylor Guitars Acoustic Challenge in September 2016. Having collected the necessary ammunition, pebbles and experience, Sounds Of Kites began recording his debut album “Remember Sycamore” in April 2017 in Selangor, Malaysia. The album speaks of a reminder to always remember the trails and climbs done in the past, to desperately breaking away from the constraints that have chained us down, and to salute a solemn farewell to changing faces. With “Remember Sycamore” out in September 2018, Sounds Of Kites will take you on a musical journey that would make fishermen hungry for more water, and children run on fields with feet on forgotten shoes.
