More than anything else , FERGANA is proud to be hosting Shahidul - just for one day - and launch his latest book , " THE TIDE WILL TURN".
Datin Marina Mahathir , a friend to Shahidul , and a social activist in her own right , has gracefully agreed to officiate this modest launch.
This is an event that is opened to the public , and there is no entry charge.
We will have limited copies of the book on sale during the launch.
The price is MYR 135.00 per copy.
Please email exhibitions@fergana-art.com for pre-launch orders.
Shahidul Alam (born 1955) is a Bangladeshi photojournalist, teacher and social activist. He has been a photographer for more than forty years and "his photographs have been published in almost every major western media outlet".
"We both live in what are called democracies, though we know we lack voice.
The threat of bail being withdrawn is the threat they hope will silence my tongue, my pen and my camera"
[ extract from a prison letter to Arundhati Roy]
" The experience taught me a lot about the relationship between a state and its citizens, and what a power-hungry state can do to its own citizens. If I am found guilty, it will be because Bangladesh is no longer a democracy with a free press ".
[ extract from a recent interview in New York ].
